How to Choose Comfortable Underwear for Women

Underwear is a lot like soundproofing in an apartment building — if it’s well-made and done with care, you will hardly notice it, but if it isn’t doing its job quite right… you will know. Similarly, if your women’s underwear is not doing its job like intended, it could potentially ruin your whole day.

Finding the perfect women’s underwear is difficult enough, since you can’t exactly try on a pair at the store to decide whether or not you want to buy it. However, shopping for women’s underwear has its own particular set of problems — ladies, you know what I mean. Women’s clothing manufacturers seem to make up their own sizing guidelines, which often results in you wearing a pair of panties that are a large in one brand and an extra small in another, despite the fact that the two pairs fit exactly the same!

To make matters worse, many women’s underwear brands seem to think that one pair of undies cannot be simultaneously cute and comfortable, leaving you to decide between a scratchy lacy thong that barely covers your delicate areas or a comfortable but unflattering pair of “granny panties”.

If you are struggling to find the perfect pair, here are tips and tricks to try before you go shopping to help you choose the most comfortable (and cute!) womens underwear.

  1. Know what you want your women’s underwear to do and choose your style accordingly.

You might be thinking, “I already know. I want my underwear to cover my lady bits.” Which is fair, but not every type of women’s underwear functions the same way.

For example, if you wear a lot of tight pants, skirts, or leggings and don’t want to have panty lines, boy short or brief style underwear is not the best choice. Not only will you be mentally uncomfortable (if you are self-conscious about panty lines, anyway) because the type of underwear you’re wearing will be obvious to others, but because these full-coverage styles can bunch up causing them to feel awkward and sometimes even painful underneath tight bottoms, especially jeans. A thong type of women’s underwear would be best for these situations, because they discreetly protect your most sensitive areas without any excess fabric.

It is completely reasonable to have a number of different types of women’s underwear, too! Thongs for days you wear leggings, bikini briefs for everyday wear, boy shorts to sleep in — the possibilities are endless.

When you know how you want your women’s underwear to function and shop accordingly, you will be far more comfortable.

  1. Take your measurements to ensure the perfect fit.

An improper fit is one of the most common reasons that women’s underwear can be uncomfortable. Measure your waist and hips with a measuring tape and record those numbers before you go shopping. This is especially helpful when searching online for women’s underwear, because most brands have in-depth sizing information in both inches and centimeters for their products. Compare your measurements to the chart, find the correct size for you, and add to cart! If you are shopping in a store, you can always use your phone to look up the brand’s sizing on their website.

Your measurements are your most powerful tool during your journey to find the most comfortable women’s underwear for you — and any other type of clothing, for that matter.

  1. Fabric is essential to finding the most comfortable women’s underwear.

Luckily, women’s underwear manufacturers usually make their garments out of fabric that is relatively soft to the touch, usually in two different ways: regular, cozy soft; or silky-smooth. However, these fabrics may not feel so nice in the long run, and some can wreak havoc on your body.

Ultimately, fabric made of natural fibers — like cotton — is the best type for women’s underwear.

A woman’s nether regions are sensitive, and not just to the touch. Under layers of clothes, genitals tend to get a bit sweaty and damp — when this moisture has nowhere to go, paired with the warmth of your body temperature, it can become not only uncomfortable, but it creates the perfect conditions for bacteria to grow, which can result in yeast infections.

Not only is cotton soft, but it is mildly absorbent and has superior levels of breathability, wicking this moisture away from the vagina, keeping you comfortable and safe.

Synthetic fibers, like polyester, nylon, and spandex are far less breathable, and can trap heat and moisture within. The perfect conditions for bacteria growth, these types of women’s underwear fabric can lead to yeast infections or bacterial vaginosis — both of which are very uncomfortable.

However, that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t wear women’s underwear made of synthetic fabrics. Underwear made of synthetic fibers can be worn regularly. Many women don’t have any problems with them, provided that they are always properly laundered and not worn for extended periods of time. Plus, they’re great for working out, because while they do trap moisture, they are also moisture-wicking (confusing, yes) so they don’t absorb much moisture that can be uncomfortable during exercise.

Additionally, many types of women’s underwear are made using a cotton-synthetic blend, which is why your panties feel like cotton, but are still stretchy and form-fitting. A blend of natural and synthetic fibers is a great choice, because it gives you all the benefits of cotton and synthetic fibers without the downsides.
